The first step is to define the problem. It sounds like an obvious and easy thing to do. In reality, it’s difficult and often overlooked. People ask a question but don’t stop to clarify. A useful thing to ask yourself is:

“Okay, but what are we really trying to answer?”

It sounds simple. To do it properly takes a surprising amount of work.
